The Royal Berkshire Hospital is the largest hospital within the Trust. Established in 1839 with othe opening of the North Block, the hospital has grown significantly over the years.

Today, it offers over 800 beds across 50 wards and units, providing a wide range of healthcare services to the community of Berkshire.

The hospital is located in central Reading, Berkshire.

How to find us

By car

While spaces might be limited, there are different parking locations at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

 

Where patients and visitors can park

If you are parking in the multi-storey, North Block or Endoscopy car parks, you will not need to take a ticket or display a ticket when you enter as your car will be registered with the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR).

You will need to pay on exit. The barriers at the multi-story car park will automatically rise whether you have made payment or not. Pay machines can be found on levels 0,1,2 and 3 and accept card or coins (unfortunately no change can be given). Payment can also be made on the APCOA Connect app or on the APCOA website using the ‘Late Pay Option’ within 24 hours of exiting the car park.

Melrose House Car Park operates on a pay and display basis. Pay before you leave your car and display the ticket.

All prices are benchmarked against other local car parks, and all income is reinvested back into supporting patient and staff transport such as our dedicated Park and Ride.

Forgotten to pay for parking

For those who forget to pay, forgotten their card, phone or money they can pay later online. Only in use for ANPR Car Parks detailed above.

APCOA LatePay is a post-pay option for any customer, registered or not, who fails to pay on the day they park at any ANPR-enabled location. Users can pay online up to 24 hours later and thus avoid enforcement action

  1. Visit APCOA Connect website and select AutoPay or LatePay option.
  2. Enter vehicle registration information (along with selected tariff in the case of AutoPay).
  3. Enter payment information. All customer information is held in compliance to DPA and DSS security standards. 

 

Blue Badge Parking Information

Where you can park

All visitor car parks have dedicated blue badge bays. Any extra blue badge bays can be found:

  • West Drive (off Redlands Road)
  • Craven Road (outside the TEC Centre, next to St Andrews Church)
  • Craven Road (opposite Maternity building)

 

How blue badge holders validate their parking

Always display the clock section of the blue badge in your car.

There are two ways you can validate your parking:

  • Register your blue badge on the APCOA Blue Badge portal - this will register your car for up to one year or until the expiry date of your blue badge, whichever is sooner, and will validate your parking at all APCOA managed car parks across the country (see website for details).
  • Take ID section of your blue badge to main reception on Craven Road or at various locations in North Block and the Berkshire Cancer Centre (off London Road) - on every visit.

 

By bus

A number of buses travel between the hospital and Reading town centre:

Park and ride bus

There is a Number 300 'hospital' park and ride service between Royal Berkshire Hospital and the Mereoak and Thames Valley Park park and ride sites.

The 300 bus service runs Monday to Friday from 6am until 7pm buses run up to every 20 minutes, journeys cost £2 per single and parking costs £1 at Mereoak and £1 per hour at Thames Valley Park, capped at £4 per day.

By train

There are frequent services by train to Reading town centre from outlying areas served by the hospital.

You will need to connect to RBFT_GUEST and follow the prompts.

We can't guarantee wifi coverage in corridors, car parks or other transitional spaces.

Visiting information

What to expect when visiting a patient at the Royal Berkshire Hospital:

  • General visitors between 2pm and 8pm daily (recommend checking wards for specific times)

  • Open visiting for carers, care partners and relatives of patients with dementia, learning disabilities, and those at the end of their life.

  • Only two visitors per patient at one time.

  • Do not visit if you are feeling unwell or have any symptoms of Covid, colds, flu or other respiratory infections or vomiting and diarrhoea.

  • Please respect the privacy of our patients, visitors and staff members by not filming or photographing them without their consent.

  • If you're concerned about a patient's condition, and you've already spoken to the ward nurse or doctor, please use Call 4 Concern, our patient safety service.

  • Friends and relatives can also stay in touch with patients by smart device / mobile. There are iPads on the wards so you can safely communicate via video / social media.

  • Please speak to the ward manager or nurse in charge if you have any questions.
