Congratulations to the Point of Care Testing (POCT) team at Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services (BSPS) who last week won the NHS England Chief Scientific Officer Award for the Outstanding Healthcare Science Service of the year in the 2025 Advancing Healthcare Awards.

The team continues to set the standard in delivering high-quality, UKAS-accredited diagnostics. Supporting six acute and 26 community Trusts, the team delivers over 56,000 tests daily across 1,380 devices, including 24/7 rapid respiratory testing and dedicated Hospital@Home support.

In 2024, the team launched major innovations including direct device-to-record data capture for urine tests, improving data quality and easing nursing admin. Blood gas reporting now includes age and sex-specific reference ranges, enhancing accuracy for vulnerable patients.

BSPS is a national leader in training, governance and sharing best practice - hosting workshops, publishing findings, and supporting projects as far afield as France and Germany. The service was the first multi-NHS Trust POCT service to achieve ISO15189:2022 accreditation.

By empowering clinicians with reliable, rapid results, BSPS POCT aims to help deliver faster patient care while supporting antimicrobial stewardship, reducing admissions, and improving outcomes.
