Consultant Physician in Stroke Medicine

Stroke

A stroke is a serious life-threatening medical condition that happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off. Strokes are a medical emergency and urgent treatment is essential.

The Stroke service offers 24/7 hyperacute stroke treatment (intravenous thrombolysis, mechanical thrombectomy referrals, higher monitoring of stroke patients), TIA clinics and stroke-specific rehabilitation.

We treat more than seven hundred strokes and one thousand TIA referrals every year. Our patients have direct and easy access to CT and MRI brain imaging, and cardiac investigations including Holter monitoring, echocardiogram, implantable cardiac recorder and contrast echocardiogram.

Stroke Innovation

Our stroke department is a pioneering service in the treatment of stroke patients. It has been designated as a hyper-acute stroke unit (HASU) since 2010 and is recognised as a Centre of Excellence for thrombolysis (clot busting) treatment.

The department employs a variety of innovative techniques in treatment of stroke such as AI software which has seen the number of stroke patients achieving functional independence more than double.
