PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis)

PrEP at the Florey Clinic

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a highly effective medication that prevents HIV. When taken correctly, PrEP reduces the risk of HIV by more than 99%.

What is PrEP?

PrEP is medication taken before and after sex to prevent HIV from entering the body and replicating. Most oral PrEP contains two HIV medicines in one pill:

  • Tenofovir disoproxil (TD)
  • Emtricitabine (FTC)

For people with kidney or bone concerns, including those under 18 whose bones are still developing, the NHS uses an alternative version containing TAF (tenofovir alafenamide).

Injectable PrEP

In October 2025, a long-acting PrEP injection (cabotegravir) was approved in England, Scotland and Wales for people who cannot use oral PrEP. It is given every 2 months.

We are working to introduce injectable PrEP at the Florey Clinic soon.

Do I need PrEP?

You do not need PrEP if:

  • You are already HIV positive.
  • You are happy and able to use condoms every time.
  • You only have sex with HIV‑positive partners who have an undetectable viral load on treatment (U=U).
  • You don’t use condoms but your partner is considered low risk for HIV.

If you’re unsure, we can help you decide
