Medical Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) Unit

Our Same Day Emegency Care (SDEC) Unit provides rapid assessment, diagnosis and treatment for patients with certain acute medical conditions, helping people recieve the care they need without staying overnight in hospital.

Led by a team of specialist acute physicians, and supported by a dedicated team of SDEC nurses (including Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPS)), doctors, HCAs, ward clerks & housekeepers, the service is designed for patients who may otherwise require admission to a hospital ward.

Patients are referred to SDEC by healthcare professionals in our Emergency Department, Paramedics, and GPs. The service is not a walk-in clinic, and appointments can only be arranged through referral.

Attending your appointment

If you are referred to SDEC, please attend as soon as possible after the unit opens. This will provide you the best opportunity to access all the care you need in one visit.

If you are referred later in the day, and it is clinically appropriate to do so, you may be asked to attend at 8am the following morning.

Whilst you are under the care of the Unit you are likely to be based in the Medical SDEC waiting room, and will move to and from the clinical assessment spaces when you are speaking with the clinical team, and having tests done.  You may also have tests, such as x-rays, in other parts of the hospital.

What happens next?

Most patients are able to return home on the same day after receiving treatment. However, if further care is required, you may:

  • Be admitted to a hospital ward
  • Be asked to return to SDEC for follow-up care
  • Be referred to another appropriate service within the Trust
