Maternity Assessment Unit (MAU) & Day Assessment Unit (DAU)
The Maternity Assessment Unit (MAU) is an outpatient department to assess and monitor pregnant women with urgent or ongoing obstetric complications. It is located on Level 3 in the Maternity block next to the Delivery Suite.
You may be referred to the MAU in pregnancy if your community midwife or Doctor has any concerns about you or your baby's health. When you meet your community midwife for the first time they will ensure that the Maternity triage telephone number is in records to refer to and tell you which issues you will need to talk to us about if they arise.
The MAU is like the Emergency department for pregnant and postnatal women where we see cases when there are urgent concerns about either the mother's or baby's health. We do have to prioritise care for those in most need, so it is a good idea to bring something to read while you wait to be seen. We will endeavour to see you as soon as possible, but if you are worried about the waiting time, please do speak to the staff on duty. Examples of cases that we see here include - concerns about babies' movement, vaginal bleeding or abdominal pain
The Maternity telephone triage line (0118 322 7304) is manned by a Midwife 24 hours a day, so you can all at any time of day or night for advice, and if appropriate, you will be advised to come in and be assessed in the MAU if you have any concerns.
The Maternity Day Assessment Unit (DAU) is an outpatient department located on level 2 in the Maternity block within the Antenatal Clinic.
This area is for planned appointments when there has been an issue identified in your pregnancy that needs some additional appointments over and above routine plan of care, they are not classed as urgent. Examples of cases that we see here include; blood pressure monitoring or regular monitoring of babies' heartbeats where there may be some concerns about the baby being smaller than expected.
