Using tech to share our expertise with colleagues near and far

We are always keen to look for opportunities to share the expertise colleagues at the Trust have, and also to pick up new ways of working from partners within the rest of the NHS and internationally.

Just recently Mr Amar Malhas, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Trust led a group of colleagues from Orthopaedics in hosting a two-day conference, attended by Surgeons from across the NHS, and a surgeon who travelled to the event from Germany.

The two-day forum, titled ‘Shoulder Knowledge Instructional Learning and Live Surgery’ or SKILLS for short involved a combination of in-depth discussions on the latest trends, techniques, and innovation in the world of shoulder replacement surgery, alongside two shoulder replacement operations taking place in the Royal Berkshire Hospital theatres. These were livestreamed back to the gathered attendees off-site.

Mr Malhas said, “I am proud of the expertise of the team we have in Orthopaedics at the Trust, and this was an opportunity for us to share those skills, tips, and ways of working. Many of the attendees were established consultants as well as surgeons at the start of their careers.

“It can take many years, especially when at the start of a surgical career to build up hands on experience and hours in theatre. We carry out a significant number of shoulder replacements at the Trust and are recognised as a centre of excellence for shoulder arthroplasty (replacements). It is a privilege to be able to share some of our experiences.

“We are thankful to our patients who agreed to have their surgery shared in this way. We are also thankful to our experienced faculty, and a big thank you to our wonderful theatre team, it would not have been possible without them. I know everyone attending found it very beneficial, and I am sure they will take what they have learned back to their respective Trusts. By sharing experiences and surgical techniques we can hopefully improve outcomes for all of our patients and develop a network of like minded surgeons.”
