Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT)

Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) diagnose, evaluate and manage diseases of head and neck and principally the ears, nose and throat as well as structures of the mouth and face, salivary glands and thyroid gland.

The department provides an integrated approach to head and neck care by working closely with other health professionals such as radiologists, clinical oncologists, ophthalmologists, speech therapists, dietitians, audiologists and nurse specialists.

We also hold clinics at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, West Berkshire Community Hospital in Thatcham and Bracknell Healthspace.

If you’re receiving ear, nose or throat care here at the Royal Berkshire Foundation Trust, you may be asked to receive your treatment in a hospital in Oxfordshire or Buckinghamshire if you’re able to travel there. This is to provide you with care more quickly.

Clinics

We do not offer a walk-in casualty service or accept self-referrals from patients. For any emergencies, please attend the main Emergency Department (A&E) where you will be assisted.

Clinics are open Monday to Friday from 8.30am to 4.30pm. We offer the following clinics:

  • General ENT clinic
  • General Paediatric clinic
  • Acute Referral clinic
  • Ear Care Clinic
  • Rapid Access Neck Lump Clinic
  • Otology
  • Thyroid Malignancy MDT
  • General Head and Neck Oncology MDT
Children's ENT

The clinic sees children and young people from birth to 16 years and is situated in the West Drive buildings at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

The ENT team works in close conjunction with Audiology and Speech and Language therapists. Your child might need assessment by all the different specialities during the same visit. If so, appointments can last as long as two hours.

Only one or two adult carers per patient. When arriving, please bring:

  • If your child is under five years old, bring their red book with you
  • Baby feeds, nappies and other essentials
  • Snacks or drinks, especially if your child has a special diet
  • Any medication your child is taking
  • Your child's favourite toy, book or comforter. There are a small amount of toys in the waiting area.

The department can be very busy, and if this is the case, appointment times may run late. Please speak to a member of staff who will be able to keep you up to date with any delays.
