Forum for feedback and shaping maternity services in Reading, Wokingham and West Berkshire.

What is the forum?

Reading Maternity Voices is a committee or team of service users, service user representatives, midwives, doctors and commissioners.  We work together to review and contribute to the development of local maternity services.  We're an independent body, reporting to the local Federation of GP Commissioning Groups that commissions maternity services.

What is included in maternity services?

Maternity Services include:

  • Antenatal Care: Care given by midwives and obstetricians (doctors specialising in pregnancy and birth) at appointments and scans performed within the hospital setting before the birth.
  • Care given during birth whether at home or in Hospital.
  • Postnatal (after the birth) support offered by midwives to new parents and their babies.

How does the forum work?

The forum is a collaboration between professionals and service user representatives (parents).

It includes:

  • NHS midwives and doctors involved in Maternity Services.
  • Representatives from the local Primary Care Trust (Service Commissioners).
  • Parents from the local community.
  • Members of voluntary groups who offer services to new parents and their babies, such as the National Childbirth Trust, Lamaze, doulas and homebirth groups.

The volunteer service user representatives meet monthly for either a formal meeting with the whole committee, a review and planning session, or a feedback session in the community.  You can also find the user reps out in the community collecting feedback from women and their partners about their experiences of using local maternity services.  Feedback can also be given via an online survey, when we walk the patch on our postnatal wards, and through the use of focus groups.

Can I be involved?

You are welcome to get involved if you are a parent living in Reading, Wokingham and West Berkshire and have used local maternity services.

We would be interested in your views about:

  • Parent-craft classes
  • Community maternity care.
  • Care given in labour.
  • Postnatal care and feeding support.
  • Other areas of care given to you that you feel are important and how they can be improved.
  • What was good about your experience of maternity care?
  • What, if anything, wasn't good?
  • What ideas do you have for improvements?

Your feedback will be used to further develop and improve the Maternity Services in Reading, Wokingham and West Berkshire.
