The Department of Gastroenterology provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services for patients with gastro-intestinal and liver diseases.

Wards, clinics and services

The Endoscopy Unit provides for the full range of endoscopic procedures including diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and colonoscopy, ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound, small bowel enteroscopy and wireless capsule endoscopy. The Department is an accredited centre for the National Bowel Cancer Screening Programme. We provide a consultant delivered out-of-hours emergency endoscopy service for GI bleeding.

Outpatient clinics and endoscopy lists are held at the Royal Berkshire Hospital and at West Berkshire Community Hospital.

Sidmouth Ward  is an acute medical ward specialising in gastro-enterology, and also patients undergoing medical investigations.

We work seamlessly with the departments of upper GI and colorectal surgery to provide the 2 Week Wait service for suspected GI cancer. In addition to this we offer a specialist viral hepatitis clinic, comprehensive inflammatory bowel disease service, hospital nutrition support team and gastrostomy (PEG) service.

Staff details

The staff includes five consultant physicians, five clinical nurse specialists, three GP endoscopy practitioners, endoscopy nursing, technical and administrative staff, an IBD counsellor, a nutrition support dietitian and pharmacist.

GI physiologists

GI physiologists specialise in the study of gastrointestinal function and conditions, which includes any part of the digestive tract from the oesophagus to the anus and also of the liver, biliary tract and the pancreas.

The tests they carry out involve a series of pictures being taken of the oesophagus, stomach and small intestine. Usually the tests are used to diagnose problems like ulcers, acid reflux, serious vomiting or bloody stools.
