The Eye Unit was opened in 1968. It includes an in-patient ward with adjacent day-bed unit.

The outpatient department runs general and specialist clinics and eye casualty, and there is also an excellent Orthoptic Department.

Slit-lamp and indirect argon lasers, Nd.-YA laser and photodynamic therapy are available.

The department has fluoroscein angiography, digital photography, A & B-scan ultrasound, corneal topography, optic coherence tomograpy, ultrasound pachymetry, and IOL master biometry available. The Eye Casualty Unit was completely refurbished in 2016.

The RBH hospital eye service has eleven consultants covering a wide range
of ophthalmic disease, all based full or part time at the RBH. There is one associate specialist, three fellows, four staff grades, one specialist registrar and one specialty trainee (VTS). The RBH consultant ophthalmologists all undertake general ophthalmology with special interests:
