Royal Berks Charity annual whacky races raises over £6000

Teams of amateur drivers have for the past few months been busy building their soapbox dream machines in readiness for the second annual Royal Berks Charity Soapbox Challenge. And, last Saturday (8 September) the fearless teams gathered at Englefield Park to put their creative and crazy creations to the test.

The teams put their faith in their engineering skills and hoped that their gravity powered racers were strong enough to withstand anything the course might throw at them!  Starting at the top car park next to Englefield House, the action packed course ran for 350 meters downhill. Obstacles, twists and turns, a newly added chicane and a jump, all added to the challenge and some extra excitement for the crowd who came to cheer the adrenalin charged drivers on.

Charity Director Ian Thomson said: “We are delighted with how well the Soapbox Challenge went,we raised over £6000 – a fantastic achievement. Plans are already underway for an even bigger and better event for 2019. We are very grateful to the Porsche Centre Reading and Jacobs the Jewellers for their sponsorship, and the Thameswey Institute of Mechanical Engineers Young Members Panel who awarded a trophy to the best designed soapbox, won by Veolia with their brilliant soapbox Bin n Gon. Thanks too, to the Dulux Decorator Centre in Newbury, who very kindly donated paint for all the competitors and the mini jump.

“We would also like to thank the Benyon family, and all who help manage the Englefield Estate for supporting the event, and of course to all the entrants, supporters and volunteers from the Trust, Berkshire Masons and Rotary Club of Reading Maiden Erlegh, and the many other individuals who helped make the day such an amazing success.”

Winners for both the senior and junior categories were Team Hiscock – well done to them and all the other individual and team competitors which included Porsche, Veolia, GM Solutions, Knight Printing, Visa and defending champions 360 Medical.  More information on race times for all the entrants can be found at www.stuweb.co.uk .
