Sister Laura Kabambe with David Church
Patients, visitors and staff on Victoria ward at the Royal Berkshire Hospital are delighted that thanks to the generosity of Newbury resident, David Church, their day room has undergone a fabulous makeover.
Laura Kabambe, Sister for Victoria ward, along with other members of the team welcomed David on Thursday 28 September, to officially open the revamped room that provides a home-from-home environment, where patients and visitors can enjoy some quiet, private time, set apart from the ward, to take a break during visiting hours.
The refurbishment is the latest of David’s projects on the ward. Since losing his wife, Maureen, in 1999 David has raised an outstanding £30,000. His donations in the past have enabled the team to purchase additional equipment and improve the environment for patients and staff.
On cutting the ribbon David said: "It's a real pleasure to fund the refurbishment of this lovely day room and I hope that it will help make a difference to the patients and visitors on the ward. My late wife received excellent care here and I’m delighted that I have been able to give something back. I would like to thank everyone who has taken part in activities and contributed over the years to make the fundraising such a success.”
Following the opening Laura thanked David for his support: “We can’t thank you enough for this wonderful makeover and for the support you have shown us over the years. We are already receiving some great feedback from patients and visitors on having such a lovely space. It really does make such a difference.”
David’s next fundraising event is planned for Saturday 28 October, a quiz night in Wash Common, Newbury.
