Women and Birthing People Seeking Sanctuary

Women and Birthing People Seeking Sanctuary

In partnership with Berkshire West Public Health we’re running special maternity clinics in West Berkshire, to help reduce health inequalities in maternity care for families seeking sanctuary.

The clinic aims to help vulnerable families from across Reading, Wokingham and West Berkshire who may be refugees, asylum seekers, trafficked or fleeing conflict to access extra support in addition to their routine antenatal care.

During the clinic sessions, women and birthing people will be able to be seen by a midwife and an obstetrician. They will also receive support from other organisations including, Reading Refugee Support, Compass Recovery College (mental health support) and Maternity Voices Partnership.

The clinics will be a safe environment for families to develop social support networks, and we have reduced many of the barriers to attending healthcare appointments including the provision of free transport and interpreters.

Families are invited by midwife referral, with over 50 people attending the last clinic session in September.

Strike Action

Our Trust will be impacted by Royal College of Nursing strike action on 15 and 20 December. We are working to ensure minimal disruption and will contact patients directly if we have to cancel appointments.
