There was a real party atmosphere on 26 April when over 60 mums, dads, babies and their brothers and sisters gathered to celebrate a successful first year for the Home Birth Team from the Royal Berkshire.
The small team of specialist midwives provides a 24/7 service for low risk women to enable them to have a choice in the place of birth. They provide antenatal, labour care and postnatal care within the home, including support in hypnobirthing, waterbirthing and aromatherapy. In their first year they have helped over 85 women to have their delivery at home.
Gill Valentine, Director of Midwifery said “I am incredibly proud of this achievement by the Team, and hugely appreciative of how they have worked so hard to make it the success it is today. It’s also wonderful to see so many people back here today to help us celebrate, and I hope we can spread the word and let other mums know about this brilliant service”.
Mum Ani, who was there with her baby Robyn, said: “I regret not knowing about the service with my first baby. My first birth at Royal Berkshire hospital was brilliant, but talking to a colleague who had had a home birth, I decided to go for it. It was the best thing I could have done. My partner and my other daughter were there, and the midwife was great, answering all my daughters many questions”.
Mum Emily was also there with her daughter Molly, and said: “it was wonderful. I couldn’t have wanted anything more, I was so well looked after before, during and after.”
Dad Michael was also there with his daughter Beatrix. Michael said he was “apprehensive at first, but after the birth you know that you made the right decision.”
