Chesterman Unit

The Unit is the admission suite for booked orthopaedic and general surgical patients.

Matron: Lynne Buttery
Sisters: Belinda Elba, Melodie Gilbuena, Janet Mkaka, Anita Abbey-Quaye.

Single sex accommodation: Mixed in the general reception area, with separate male and female facilities for consultations and changing.

Visitors: We understand that patients coming in for surgery are often nervous and prefer to have someone wait with them. Space in the Unit is limited, so we ask that only one person accompanies each patient and that they are considerate of other patients waiting for surgery.

The unit is not suitable for babies or children. As our patients are nil by mouth when they come to us, eating and drinking by friends or relatives is discouraged.

What happens in the Unit?

On admission to the Chesterman Unit, nursing staff will greet you and complete with you the further assessments and paperwork required in preparation for you to go to theatre.

Nursing staff can only give a very rough estimate of the time for your surgery as the order of operating lists is liable to change by theatres, but we will keep you informed if delays are occurring. Some of the theatre lists are ‘all day lists’ and this can mean that you are waiting some time before you go to surgery.

Patients are admitted to the Unit early in the day so that the doctors and anaesthetists are able to see them before entering the theatre suite. In the case of delays, the Chesterman staff will do their utmost to ensure you can have access to your allocated bed as soon as possible, but this may take a little time while patients are discharged from the wards.

You will go to theatre from Chesterman, but will return to a bed on one of our wards – you will be told which ward before your operation and will be given the direct phone number for your family.

Mobile phones: Patients may use mobile phones – please keep them on silent / vibrate modes and be sensitive to others around you. Visitors should leave the Unit and use their phones away from clinical areas.

Nearest car park / how to find us: Multi-storey pay & display. Take the stairs or lift to level 2. Go through Main Entrance into Centre Block (signed All Wards and Departments), turn left at the Welcomers desk into the Centre Block main corridor and continue through to South Block. At the courtyard with the fish pond, turn left, then take the lift or stairs up to level 3. Turn right from the lift or stairs – Chesterman is along the corridor in front of you.

Drop-off points only are available in the South Block car park, off Redlands Road. Parking on roads around the hospital is very limited and has strict time restrictions – please check as the area is regularly patrolled.
