The Endocrine Surgery Department deals
principally with the surgical management of thyrotoxicosis,
patients with multinodular thyroid disease and patients with
thyroid nodules.
In addition, parathyroid surgery is also
carried out for patients diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism
and there is close liaison with the Renal Unit for the management
of patients requiring surgery for renal hyperparathyroidism.
A thyroid and parathyroid clinic is held every Tuesday afternoon
at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, on the first Friday afternoon of
the month at Townlands Hospital in Henley and on the 2nd and 4th
Friday afternoons of the month at West Berkshire Community
Hospital.
Additional availability for these patients is on Wednesday
mornings. There is a close working relationship with the ENT Unit
for the management of thyroid cancer patients. A fortnightly
Thyroid Cancer MDT occurs as well as a Joint Thyroid Cancer
Clinic.
