Adult Acute Speech & Language Therapy Department

The Adult Acute Speech & Language Therapy Department is a service provided by NHS Berkshire West.

The Department is made up of five Speech & Language Therapists who provide assessment and management of communication and swallowing difficulties to all RBH inpatients and ENT/voice out-patients.

There is a separate Speech & Language Therapy service for children. Contact 0118 322 7235.

We can help with:

  • swallowing problems and provide safe options for eating and
drinking to reduce the risk of choking (aspiration)
  • complex swallowing problems using an x-ray test called a videofluoroscopy
  • problems forming sentences or finding words
  • problems with reading or writing after a stroke or head injury
  • problems with slurred speech following a stroke, or as part of a condition like Parkinson’s Disease
  • hoarse, husky or poor voice quality
  • speech and speech valves; swallowing problems after head and
    neck surgery

We also have a Community Speech and Language Therapy Team who can continue therapy and advice after discharge from the hospital across West Berkshire for therapy nearer people’s homes. We also offer training to the staff  in the RBH.
