The Unit treats patients with end
stage renal failure requiring renal replacement therapy in the form
of CAPD (Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis).
When the kidneys fail the fluid and
waste products healthy kidneys normally deal with accumulates in
the blood stream making the patient unwell. Dialysis (CAPD)
artificially removes this fluid and waste products.
CAPD is a therapy mainly performed by the patient to themselves
in their own home. On Albert ward we teach the patient, family and
carers how to perform the dialysis. We support patients in dialysis
related emergency situations, offering an ‘open door’ policy direct
to the unit Monday - Friday. Additionally we provide maintenance,
surveillance and on-going training to this patient group.
Additionally, the CAPD Unit also handles the maintenance IV drug
therapy side of the care of some renal transplant and pre-dialysis
patients.
The unit also performs native and transplanted kidney
biopsies for patients who are suitable and assists the
Haemodialysis Units with vascular access issues when required.
To access the ‘open door’ policy all we ask is that a
telephone call be made to the unit prior to attending. 0118 322
