Bariatric (weight loss) surgery

Bariatric surgery, or weight loss surgery, refers to operations designed to reduce weight. These operations work by restricting the amount you are able to eat and/or reducing the amount of food you can absorb.

The term does not include procedures for surgical removal of body fat such as liposuction or abdominoplasty (tummy tuck).

The two most widely performed procedures are the adjustable gastric band and the gastric bypass. All operations are usually performed laparoscopically (by keyhole surgery), which will help you to get up and around and back to normal as soon as possible after surgery.

Pre-op and post-op support for gastric banding

All sessions are ‘drop-in’ so you can just turn up. There is no need to book.
Please remember that attendance at these groups is compulsory. Failure to attend may result in a delay/postponement of surgery or band adjustments.

Pre-op support

Sessions are held in the Parentcraft Room – Maternity Unit Level 2 ‑ Royal Berkshire Hospital on first and third Thursday each month @ 3.30pm – 5pm – IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU ATTEND AT LEAST 3 SESSIONS PRIOR TO SURGERY. Each session will have a different focus: Medical, Diet,  Psychology. You need to attend on of each topic but it doesn't matter in which order you attend them.
