Cranbury College Hospital Teaching Service

Dolphin and Lion wards have a team of fully qualified primary and secondary teachers who teach on the wards, Monday to Friday, during Reading Borough Council term time. We are committed to offering a broad and balanced curriculum for children at all key stages.

The Hospital Team comprises 2 teachers,  2 Higher Level Teaching Assistants and an administration assistant. Teaching is usually on a 1:1 basis at bedside, though where appropriate children are taught in small groups in the Play Room. We endeavour to provide interactive, engaging and fun activities using up-to-date resources. School work completed in the hospital is proudly displayed on boards around the wards.

For all pupils with an extended stay of more than three days, effective partnerships are made with their home school to provide continuity in their learning. Teaching is adapted to the patient’s abilities and linked to National Curriculum guidelines. Lesson plans and daily records of progress and attainment are kept for all long stay learners. The records and completed work, are posted to the child’s home school on their discharge. A referral mechanism is in place for children who need home tuition for a period before returning to school.

The teaching staff can also arrange for children to take public examinations (SATs and GCSEs) whilst in hospital.

Ofsted rated us ‘Good’ in February 2018.
