Who are our volunteers?

Our volunteers come from all walks of life and range in age from 17 to 80 plus.

Many sixth form students, who are considering applying to study medicine, nursing or other professions allied to medicine, work a minimum of 2/3 hours per week for 12 months as part of our survey team to gain insight and experience to help them decide if the career will suit them.

What can we offer our volunteers?

  • job satisfaction
  • an annual party
  • reimbursement of travel expenses
  • free parking
  • use of the staff dining room at staff prices
  • monthly information meetings
  • the chance to meet new people and to gain new skills

How to apply

If you are interested in working as a volunteer please apply via NHS jobs. Please note that due to the high demand we only advertise during the first two weeks of each month or you are welcome to arrange an appointment to speak to Lynn Bayliss, the  Voluntary Services Manager. You will then be able to find out more about the types of work available and the way your time and skills may best be used.

All men and women over the age of 17 are welcome to apply.

We currently only have vacancies at the Royal Berkshire Hospital Reading.

The Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust is committed to achieving equality of opportunity, both for those already working for the Trust and for those seeking to join us. No applicant will receive less favourable treatment, on the grounds of gender, racial or ethnic origin, disability, religion, age or sexual orientation.

If accepted and a suitable placement has been found you will be asked to complete a confidential health form requesting details of your medical history and checking your immunity to various diseases. If you wish to drive for the hospital a short medical examination by the staff health doctor will be arranged. There is an upper age limit of 70 for new volunteer drivers.

Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (exceptions) Order 1975

Staff working in the National Health Service are required to declare any convictions that may for other purposes be spent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

All volunteers are required to have a CRB (police check) clearance and prove they have a right to work in the UK.
