The Reading & District Hospitals
Charity operates from the Appeal Office at the Royal Berkshire NHS
Foundation Trust and provides fundraising advice and administrative
support for charitable funds held by various wards and departments
in the Trust and West Berkshire Community Hospital.
The origins of the Charity go back to
1986 when it was decided to launch a major charitable appeal to
mark the 150th Anniversary of the Royal Berkshire Hospital.
That appeal successfully raised £1.5million (in conjunction with
Macmillan Cancer Care) for the refurbishment of the Radiotherapy
Department, and the Berkshire Cancer Centre was officially opened
by Her Majesty the Queen in 1989.
The people involved in that project; consultants and non-medical
staff, thought that it would be worthwhile retaining the Appeal
Office, offering services to assist wards and departments in the
then Royal Berkshire and Battle Hospitals with their own
fundraising. The charity was formed, as West Berkshire Hospitals
Charity, in late 1991. Since 1991 many more funds have elected to
come under its “umbrella” and the charity now looks after over 40
funds supporting a wide range of wards and departments. The charity
changed its name to Reading & District Hospitals Charity in
January 2001.
The Charity aims to assist in fundraising for “extras” that are
outside the range of the NHS budget to the benefit of patients
within the area covered by the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation
Trust.
The charity is completely separate from the NHS and the Royal
Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust. However, it works closely with the
Trust, which is represented on their board of Trustees. It is
registered with the Charity Commission, registered charity number
1007779.

full details of the charity's registered number. They can also
supply collecting boxes and buckets.
You may wish to create your own personal fundraising page for
sponsors to donate online. If you do set up your own fundraising
page, please be sure to advise the Appeal Office, so we can ensure
that donations received are directed to your intended fund. Please
visit www.justgiving.com/rdhc
Perhaps you would like to raise money in someone’s memory as a
special way to celebrate their life.
You can create an ‘In Memory’ page on JustGiving, where you can
tell the story of the person you’re remembering (using words,
photos and video) and explain why you’re raising money in their
memory. Visit www.justgiving.com/rdhc/remember
Your family and friends can give to your page easily, safely and
securely, wherever they are, whenever they want to. JustGiving
sends the donations straight to the charity and reclaims Gift Aid
automatically on their behalf. Together you can make a real
difference in memory of your loved one.
