The Lord Lieutenant for Berkshire, the
Hon Mrs Mary Bayliss DL JP, launched the first of a new era in CT
scanners during a special ceremony at the Royal Berkshire
Hospital.
It forms part of a £1.5 million upgrade
of equipment in the Radiology Department, making the
department one of the most modern and best equipped in
the country.
The High Definition CT Scanner brings the shape of future
healthcare to the people of Berkshire and surrounding areas. The
Royal Berkshire Hospital is installing two of the CT scanners - the
first hospital in the country to offer the units to patients.
It will be one of just seven hospitals in the world to have the
new HD scanners in use.
Acting Chief Executive, Martin Sheldon, said: "These new
machines will mean real benefits in care for our patients. When we
became a foundation trust we promised that it would mean the latest
and best methods of care and treatment for our patients. Becoming
one of the first hospitals in the world to install these much
improved CT scanners is a clear example of us delivering on that
promise."
Apart from giving medical teams better quality images to help
their diagnostic process, the two new CT scanners deliver patients
a 50 per cent lower dose of radiation than in the case of more
traditional units. They will play a key role in the diagnosis and
treatment of cancer - but the new scanners will also be able to
help in the diagnosis of cardiac conditions.
