Launch of the West Berkshire lung cancer support programme
A new lung cancer information and support
programme for the Berkshire area will be launched by the Royal
Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.
This new programme will provide the
opportunity for lung cancer patients, their families and friends to
meet monthly, have a chat with other people in similar situations
to themselves, learn more about lung cancer issues, and meet with
their local Lung Cancer Nurse Specialist.
Every 15 minutes, a new case of lung cancer is diagnosed in the
United Kingdom. It is the biggest cancer killer in the UK and
around 37,000 new cases of lung cancer are reported each year.
Kate Rawlings, Clinical Nurse Specialist in Lung Cancer, said:
“We had asked patients locally what they wanted - and they came
back with a resounding yes that they would like a support group,
and more education on how to manage their symptoms. What we have
formed is a combination of these.”
Kate explains: “The diagnosis of lung cancer can leave people
feeling isolated and frustrated at the lack of information
available to them. This support programme will provide much needed
information, support and reassurance, in an informal and friendly
setting. People want to understand what is happening to them and
research shows that this type of help can reduce the distress that
patients and their families suffer.”
Sharron Heginbottom was diagnosed with the disease in 2004, she
says: “I know from my own experience that it’s really helpful to
listen to what others are going through, it helps you to realise
that you are not alone. I hope my coming to the group will help
others.”
Third Wednesday of every month
The support programme is open to both lung cancer patients and
their friends and relatives. The first meeting will take place on
Wednesday 17 February 2010, at Earley Crescent Resource Centre,
Warbler Drive, Lower Earley, RG6 4HB. The group is then set to meet
on the third Wednesday of every month.
