Chairman and Chief Executive Officer



Graham Sims

Graham Sims, joined the Trust in August 2015, bringing a wealth of chair and corporate experience and knowledge in strategy, investment, operations and leadership. He has held roles as Chairman and various Directorships within large and small corporate businesses including BP, Mobil, Compass, the Home Office, Little Chef and a number of PE backed businesses in the UK and internationally. Graham is also involved with a number of charity boards.

Chief Executive Officer

Steve McManus

Steve joined the Trust in January 2017. He began his career in the NHS in 1987 as a registered nurse. He completed his BA Hons in healthcare studies at Oxford Brookes University followed by a postgraduate certificate in evidence based healthcare from Oxford University. In 2002 he moved into management as a general manager at Radcliffe Infirmary and completed an MBA with Nottingham University Business School in 2006.

Steve then went on to University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, as a Divisional Director of Operations and subsequently as Chief Operating Officer. As a member of the executive team, he led the Trust through the process to gain foundation trust status.

In 2012 Steve took up post as Chief Operating Officer at Imperial College Healthcare and was appointed Deputy Chief Executive in 2014.

During this period Steve has also been Chair of the NHS Providers Chief Operating Officer network, and was selected as part of the first cohort on the national Aspiring Chief Executive Programme. During 2016 Steve moved from Imperial to take up the position of Managing Director at Basildon & Thurrock University Teaching Hospital FT.

Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Operating Officer

Mary Sherry

Mary joined the Trust in June 2015 as Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Operating Officer. Before that, she was Chief Operating Officer at Moorfields Eye Hospital, a 23 site networked specialist hospital where she led operational delivery and developed a challenging transformation programme. Mary has seven years of Board level experience in acute general hospital care, often across several sites.

She is known for working collaboratively with clinical and non-clinical teams to deliver a broad agenda across quality, performance and finance – key roles being at Poole Hospital, Portsmouth, Surrey & Sussex and St George’s Teaching Hospital.

Mary is a non-clinical manager with an HR background, Lean and Systems Thinking trained. She is experienced in supporting staff to deliver high quality services and has been successful in doing so including in financially challenged Trusts.

Director of Finance

Craig Anderson

Craig previously worked for Partnerships UK as
Finance Director and has worked closely with a number of central government departments, such as the Department for Education, on the implementation of major infrastructure programmes.

Prior to that Craig spent nine years with Thames Water, his last two years as Managing Director of Commercial Operations across the UK and Ireland. He has held a number of other finance positions in Europe and the UK including with Unisys.

Craig joined the Trust in July 2011. He is married with two teenage sons and lives in the Reading area.

Director of Nursing

Caroline Ainslie

Caroline Ainslie, who joined in June 2012, has held a number of senior roles, including Divisional Head of Nursing and Professions at Southampton, before moving to take on a strategic role as Deputy Chief Nurse at South Central Strategic Health Authority. Caroline worked initially as a Trauma & Orthopaedic nurse in Bournemouth, Southampton and other trusts before progressing into nurse management.

Medical Director

Dr Lindsey Barker►

Dr Lindsey Barker, was appointed Medical Director on the 1 May 2015. Lindsey joined the trust in 1990. She is a Consultant Nephrologist and Physician, trained in Bristol and Oxford. She has worked in medical managerial roles since 2008, most recently Divisional Director of Medicine and Care Group Director. She has been instrumental in the redesign of several medical services and specifically the growth of the Reading Renal Unit.

Non Executive Director

Brian Hendon

With a background in finance, Brian Hendon has held a number of senior executive board positions with large private sector companies and also has extensive experience in non-executive roles.

His non-executive posts include Thames Valley Housing Association Limited and NHS Berkshire East from which he stood down when appointed to the interim post at the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust.

Brian joined the Trust in August 2012. He lives in Ascot.


Non Executive Director

Alison Hill

Alison Hill has wide experience in the health service – both at a national level in senior management and as a GP working in the community.

For many years she worked as a GP in Nettlebed , Oxfordshire, before pursuing a career in policy development and implementation in a series of health service and academic posts.

Alison served as Professional Policy Advisor to the Department of Health NHS Genetics Team and Director of Effective Practice Programme at the King’s Fund.

Her management roles have included Medical Director for NHS London where she was responsible for the performance of over a quarter of the GPs dentists, optometrists and community pharmacists in the capital.

Alison joined the Trust in December 2013 and lives in Pangbourne, Berkshire.


Non Executive Director

Julian Dixon

Julian has worked in leadership roles in the academic, healthcare and commercial sectors.

He worked for more than twenty years in global healthcare companies, most recently at GSK where he held a number of senior roles leading teams developing and launching new health technologies. He went on to become Chief Operating Officer at UCLPartners, an Academic Health Science partnership.

Julian is now Managing Director at Strategic Health Connections, a consultancy which helps organisations to translate innovation into improved health and wealth outcomes.

Julian was appointed as Non-Executive Director at the Trust in October 2014.


Non Executive Director

Sue Hunt

Sue Hunt joined the Trust in October 2014. She is chair of the Finance and Investment Committee and the named non-executive director (NED) for the Organ Donation Committee. Sue is a chartered accountant whose long and varied career at KPMG spanned audit, mergers and acquisitions and healthcare consultancy. She led the team contracted by the Department of Health to advise trusts on all aspects of their foundation trust application and also provided due diligence services on potential investments in the independent healthcare sector.

Sue is an experienced NED in the health, education, housing and space technologies sectors with current roles at Notting Hill Housing Group, The Satellite Applications Catapult Ltd and Future Cities Catapult Ltd. She was previously on the Board of CfBT Education Trust and was also a NED and then Acting Chair of NHS Direct until its disestablishment in 2014.

John Petitt

Non Executive Director

John Petitt►

John joined as Non Executive Director at the Trust in May 2016. He became Group Chief Executive of Housing Solutions, a leading provider of affordable homes in the South East, in September 2000, having previously been the Association’s Finance Director since the stock transfer in 1995. He is a member of the Housing Solutions Board. He is a Chartered Accountant. He was recruited from the private sector and has experience of the computer, photocopier and retail security industries: he is also Vice Chair of BCA College in Maidenhead.

Group Director of Networked Care

Dr Janet Lippett

Janet started as a Consultant Geriatrician at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in 2007 and was appointed to set up an Orthogeriatric Service for fragility fracture patients providing peri-operative care and rehabilitation. In 2010, Janet became Clinical Director for Specialist Medicine and has worked on a number of key projects such as the successful bid for Hyperacute Stroke Unit status and alternatives to hospital admissions for the elderly.

She trained at St George’s Hospital Medical School and then completed post graduate training in Geriatric Medicine in the South Thames region. Janet is passionate about high quality care for all patients but especially the elderly and continues to enjoy her clinical time with patients.

Married with two children, her hobbies include running, hiking and gardening.

Group Director of Urgent Care 

Dr Will Orr

Dr Will Orr has been a Consultant Cardiologist at the Trust since 2002. He has been a leading member of the Trust’s Heart Attack team, consistently rated the most effective in the country. He was appointed as Group Director Urgent Care in April 2016. Prior to this he was Cardiovascular Clinical Director, Thames Valley and Milton Keynes Strategic Clinical Network and Senate, and Training Programme Director for Cardiology, Health Education Thames Valley. His cardiology training was in Reading, Oxford and at Green Lane Hospital, Auckland, New Zealand.

Group Director of Planned Care

Dr Warren Fisher

Warren joined the Trust as a Consultant Anaesthetist in 2002 and is the lead for Paediatric Anaesthesia.

In addition to his medical role he has held a variety of Clinical Director positions within the Trust since 2005 and became Acting Group Director of Planned Care in April 2015. He was also a staff Governor for the Trust between 2008 – 2014.

Director of Information Management & Technology

Heather Allan ►

Heather Allan

Heather joined the Trust as Director of Information Management and Technology (IM&T) in 2014. She is working to optimise the use of technology and information, and to streamline operations and clinical services in the increasingly challenging and fast changing landscape of the NHS.

Heather's previous role before joining the Trust was Director of IM&T at Heatherwood and Wexham Park NHS Foundation Trust. Prior to that she was Chief Operating Officer at The Global Fund, Geneva - an international organisation formed to achieve progress towards the Millennium Development Goals of reducing the global spread of Aids, TB and Malaria.

She has also held a number of non-executive director roles and has experience in business leadership – delivering, directing and designing corporate technology enabled strategies giving successful business growth and change.

Heather is a mathematics graduate from Cambridge with a postgraduate degree from Edinburgh University.

Director of Workforce

Don Fairley ►

Don Fairley

Don joined as Director of Workforce in May 2016. He has been an HR Director for over 18 years and brings considerable NHS leadership experience, including six years as Director of HR with the London North West Healthcare NHS Trust. Previous experience includes working in the acute hospital sectors as Director of Workforce at Bedford Hospital NHS Trust, and various HR roles at Chelsea & Westminster Hospital, Charing Cross Hospital, West London Hospital and St Mary Abbots Hospital, before moving into the more strategic areas at the Department of Health and across commissioning in Primary Care Trusts. He holds an MSc in Strategic Human Resource Management and qualifications in Executive Coaching, and Workplace Mediation.
