Medical students
The Faculty of Medical Education provides
district general hospital attachments for 4th, 5th & 6th year
medical students from Oxford University, Imperial College and
University College London (UCL).
The Trust is exceedingly proud of the
very positive feedback received from the students’ medical schools
and are commended for their delivery of high quality training to
the students.
The Faculty organises, in collaboration with
the specialty departments within the Trust, rotations and tutorials
for the medical students to ensure that the attachments enable them
to receive the best possible learning experience for their
individual educational needs. The students are able to
identify which specialty they wish to visit before their arrival to
the Trust but flexibility is encouraged so that their scope for
learning and experience on wards, in clinics, within our Clinical
Decision Unit and other appropriate departments is maximised.
Dental education
Medical Education and
Development run courses in association with the Oxford Deanery
of Postgraduate Medical & Dental Education.
These courses cover a number of topics ranging
from mandatory CPD courses, to implantology courses,

Are you thinking of becoming a doctor?
The Faculty of Medical Education offers an
excellent pre-UCAS course that includes the opportunity for
prospective medical school applicants to visit the hospital, to
help you decide whether or not you wish to pursue a career in
medicine.
The course includes an ‘Introduction to
Medicine’ day where you can learn more about becoming a doctor and
hear what it is like, from those in the profession. The course is
open to year 12 pupils attending schools across Reading, Wokingham
and Newbury. Course details are supplied each year to the schools’
Head Teacher. Applications can only be accepted through your
school.
Your hospital visits are for clinical
observation purposes and allow you to observe consultants in their
clinical role. Prior attendance of the ‘Introduction to Medicine’
day is required before you make any visits.
The course is suitable for those interested in
pursuing a career in medicine. If you are looking for work
experience in the hospital but you are not thinking of becoming a
doctor, then this course does not provide what you are looking for
and you may wish to consider a non-medical work observation
placement in the Trust. If you are looking for voluntary work in
the hospital, then we recommend that you contact the Voluntary
Services team.
Clinical Skills Simulation Centre
The Faculty of Medical and Dental Education
has an excellent state of the art simulation centre and we are
presently enhancing the clinical simulation facilities by working
with NESC (National Health Service South Central) to provide a high
profile educational clinical skills simulation programme.
This will include high and low fidelity simulation equipment and
specialist simulation equipment.
To meet our educational goals, using high
fidelity simulation, we will be introducing SimMan 3G to train our
staff without risk to patients and to prevent medical errors. So
watch this space!
