Governors for West Berkshire & Borders
Aileen Blackley
"I am now serving my second
term as Governor and hope to consolidate my knowledge of
the management of the hospital and to continue working to improve
the patient experience.
I am a vocal member of the
Assurance Group, the Patient Experience Group and have led the
Surgical Patient Panel as Co-chair. This panel assists with surveys
and gives patient views on various documentation. I instigated the
inclusion of Governors on the Patient Safety and Experience
‘walkarounds’ in the hospital and this has given me insight into
the difficulties experienced by both patients and staff in various
departments.
I have joined the hospital Urgent Care
Programme meeting and here feel I can contribute a patient’s
perspective of emergency departments and highlight areas of
concern. I feel passionately that the best experience for patients
and their families should start at the gateway of the hospital and
continue throughout their stay.
I remain a Thatcham resident, attend
my GP surgery patient group, the West Berks Patient Panel
and also carry out volunteer work for the library
service.
I feel that during this time of change in the Trust my recent
experiences as a patient and governor and my previous nursing
knowledge give me a better understanding of the needs of patients
and their families, and how to help the Trust achieve a better
hospital experience for patients."

member of my professional body culminating in 1995/6 when
I became National President of Natfhe – The University &
College Lecturers Union.
My activities in the local community have included:
- Newbury District Councillor (Periods between 1981 and
2000)
- Formerly Theale Parish Councillor (Chairman for 4
years)
- Formerly Local Authority nominee on the Southern Tourist
Board
- Chairman of Governors of Kennet Valley Primary School

Since retiring, I have become a hospital volunteer working 3
days per week, specifically in the Cardiology Department of the
Royal Berkshire Hospital."

“I am a retired Police Officer and served as a
regular soldier in the household cavalry prior to joining the
police. During this time I have been involved in many community
activities.
I am retiring from the Thames Valley &
Chiltern Air Ambulance Trust having held the position of chairman
for the past ten years and will continue as president. I also
retired as chair of governors at my local school after 37 years.
For all of the above I was honoured to be awarded an M.B.E in 2005
for services to the community of Reading.
I am married with two children and two
grandchildren and have lived in Berkshire all my life. I feel with
my experience, especially my involvement with the Air Ambulance,
has bought me into close contact with many aspects of the NHS.”
